We are up at this ungodly hour to do godly work,
joining the Sisters of St. Joseph at their weekly vigil
outside the local ICE headquarters on the South Side.
It’s well below freezing outside, and there will be
little in the way of physical comfort on the sidewalk
where we will stand, singing and praying, creating
community that centers love, justice and healing,
that calls out the ethos of fear and senseless cruelty.
It is righteous work, and it is what we are called to do
in a world that scorns compassion and solidarity.
It is Advent after all and Holy Families are everywhere,
many of them fleeing persecution, fearing for their lives,
and the very least we can do is sing and pray for them.
