November 1: Between the Living and the Dead

As the boundary between

the living and the dead once again

grows thin on this November morning,

I offer a prayer of thanksgiving

to Saint Mary Oliver

whose black river of loss

flows strong as ever today,

and we lean into loving

what is mortal while also

learning to let it go, remembering,

and letting go again—like the river

rushing, receding, returning,

never really losing its way.

February 9: Too Much Nose Blowing

Too much nose blowing in this lovely hotel room where I wish I'd slept.
