There’s a song that’s been playing me
since before I was born. Over many years
I have been learning it, in bits and pieces,
here a drop-thumb banjo riff, there a bass
run on guitar, a plaintive piece of melody
high and thin, a sweet close harmony.
One day I’ll learn it whole, and when I sing,
every molecule of my being will resonate
and all the world will know the song.
