In the end, all storms are passing storms,
though it rarely seems so in real time—
especially when the night is long, and sleep
won’t come, and the dog can’t settle,
and floodwaters refuse to recede, and
politicians persist in irresponsible actions
or inaction, and fear and despair surround
and overwhelm every living thing—but,
yes, this storm, too, is a passing storm,
and then will be a moment of passing calm.
